1. At least 153 people died in a crush during Halloween celebrations in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, including 22 foreigners. Another 82 were injured and the city has reportedly received thousands of missing-persion reports. The president, Yoon Suk-yeol, declared a period of national mourning and promised an official investigation into the tragedy, which took place in the Itaewon district, a popular area for nightlife. 

 

대한민국 수도 서울, 할로윈 기간 동안 22명의 외국인이 포하되어있는 최소 153명의 사람이 압사되었다. 82명은 부상을 입었고 천여명의 실종 보고를 받았다고 보고했다. 윤석열 대통령은 공식적으로 nightlife로 유명한 이태원 거리에서 일어난 비극적인 사건의 조사를 약속하고 국가적 mourning을 이야기했다.

2. Hong Kong's financial summit mired in Covid. After more than two years largely sealed off from the outside world, and a violent crackdown on democracy, Hong Kong's reputation has taken a beating. But the goverment hopes to revive its vulnerable status as Asia's top commercial hub this week with a high-profile summit of global leaders from the finance industry.

홍콩의 재정회담은 Covid로 어려운 상황을 맞이했다. 2년하고도 더 오랜 시간동안 외부 세계와 단절되고 민주주의에 대한 폭력적인 탄압으로 홍콩의 명성은 타격을 입었다. 그러나 홍콩 정부는 금융업계 글로버 리더들의 고위급 회담을 통해 아시아 최고 상업 허브로써의 명성을 다시 가져오기를 희망한다.

 

It will be a hard sell. Hong Kong is still physically isolated from mainland China as a result of zero-covid policies, thereatening its traditional role as a business gateway to the mainland economy. Wall Street bosses are among the attendees, but some will be notable by their absence. A recent coivid-19 dianosis will keep the head of Citigroup, Jane Fraser, at home. Hong Kong still requires multiple tests for visitors and enforced isolation for those testing positive. Paul Chan, the city's financial secretary, aims to attend despite having contracted covid on a trip to Saudi Arabia. Zero-covid, it seems, still means lots of covid.
